camcloseThought I’d share some footage of myself recording the track “Father To Son” by Cam Tapp. Figured this is kind of a groove lesson in a way. Well, it’s my approach to playing a track and laying down a groove the best I can.

This song has a great feel and moving message. I really dig recording tunes like this one where it requires a very mature and sensitive approach to playing. The brief was to keep it simple and solid. No unnecessary overplaying. This said, I played what I was hearing. If I did a fill, it was for a reason and I made it count. We used a 70’s Pearl kit with the original snare drum. The snare actually had the original factory EVANS head on it! It actually sounded like shit when I first played it, but we mic’d it up anyway and had a listen. It was dirty, open and raw. Given the message of the song and the feel the producer was after, it actually sounded fantastic in the mix so we left it. Seriously though, the tuning goes against everything you think you know about tuning 😉

Cymbals were all Zildjians – 14″ K Custom Session Hats, 18″ K Custom Dark Crash and 20″ A Custom Ride with a sizzle. Video was just recorded on a phone but still gives a good look at the session. I also overdubbed some cymbal swells.

Hope you enjoy the track as much as I did.

The Stop the Trawler Alliance is an alliance of around 20 environment and fishing groups working together to protect our marine environment and fisheries from destructive super trawlers in Australian waters.

Tasmanian born singer-songwriter Cam Tapp is launching his song “Father to Son” to raise awareness about the damage that could be done to our oceans and fisheries from super trawlers.

Send us your favourite family fishing photo (or snorkelling or coastal holiday), and they’ll go into the competition to be part of the film clip that is made to go with “Father to Son”.

We’ll be launching the song in the media in Tasmania on Tuesday 18th Feb and will run the competition until Tuesday 4 March. The film clip will then be edited and launched, all in the campaign to stop super trawlers from risking our fisheries, oceans, and the jobs that depend on them.

Post the photos on the Stop the Super Trawler facebook photo comp event, email them to stopthetrawler@gmail.com or Instagram them with #favefishpic
